ASSASINATION, SHOOTING IN MINNESOTA EXPOSE RAW NERVES, CHURCH LEADER SAYS Released: 14 June 2025
The assassination of former Minnesota Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman and her husband Saturday morning, and the shooting of state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife are chilling examples of a society far-removed from the principles of democracy, the leader of Metropolitan Community Churches said today.
Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston, who leads the global MCC denomination, denounced this violence, which Gov. Tim Walz is calling "politically motivated."
"The United States has long taken pride in its democratic values and processes," Eggleston said. "For politically motivated violence to still be a part of the country's culture is profoundly shocking. Political rhetoric the world over has become increasingly toxic in recent years, but has reached fever pitch in the U.S. of late. On this day of the nationwide 'No Kings' protests, especially, political rhetoric needs to de-escalate dramatically, and quickly.
"As Christians, we denounce all violence," Eggleston said. "As lovers of freedom, we call on all people to seek meaningful and productive ways to resolve disagreement; violence begets violence, and that is a slope we must avoid descending at all costs."
"The people of All God's Children MCC stand united in prayer and support for these victims and their families, and for all who are impacted by these senseless acts of violence and hate," said Rev. Kenny Callagan, pastor of MCC's church in Minneapolis. "As our church name makes clear, we are all God's beloved children. No matter our differences - political, religious, or otherwise - violence is never an acceptable response."
